Leucadendrons — Tough and colourful garden additions
A welcome addition to the winter garden or bouquet, leucadendrons and their protea family cousins (leucospermums, proteas, serrurias and aulax) are hardy as hardy. These tough plants thrive in challenging conditions, tolerating frost, drought, and sandy, low-nutrient soils with ease.
Leucadendrons come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, textures, and sizes, and are often at their most vibrant during the cooler months, bringing colour and structure to the winter landscape. While they’re low-maintenance once established, leucadendrons do have specific nutrient needs. They’re highly sensitive to phosphorus, so always use a low-phosphorus, native-friendly fertiliser, such as Neutrog’s Bush Tucker or Searles Native Food.
These plants are considered wallaby- and rabbit-resistant, but it’s still wise to protect young plants during their first three years in the garden. Once established, they’re a reliable and long-lasting feature that brings both beauty and resilience to any landscape.
