Boronias — Fragrant for humans, less so for wildlife.
Boronias are characteristically known as finicky plants with relatively short lifespans in the garden, but their well-known citrusy scent makes them a worthwhile investment, especially if you enjoy aromatherapy or experimenting with liqueurs.
In fact, it’s the deep aroma released by boronias that deters most wildlife. Each leaf is dotted with oil glands rich in an earthy fragrance, and if you hold a leaf up to the light, you may be able to see these glands. Anecdotal accounts from the nursery, however, suggest that neighbourhood cats are undeterred by the smell of boronia. This can be detrimental to the plant if feline visitors deposit urine on or around your boronias.
Aside from keeping the cats away, boronias are happy growing in the ground or in pots, provided they’re in free-draining soil. They also prefer dappled shade, dislike being waterlogged, and should be sheltered from strong winds.
