Growing citrus in Tasmania

Choosing a citrus tree is about more than the fruit you like to eat. Consider how much space you have, how much sun your garden receives and whether you’d prefer to grow your tree in the ground or in a pot.

Citrus love sunshine, but Tasmania’s cooler climate means choosing the right position can make all the difference. Plant citrus in a sunny, sheltered spot where they receive plenty of light and are protected from cold winds and severe frost.

Well-drained, fertile soil is ideal. Citrus are hungry plants, so regular watering and feeding during active growth will help support healthy foliage, flowering and fruit production.

If your garden is exposed to frost or you have limited space, growing citrus in a large pot can be a great alternative. Compact varieties can be kept at a manageable size with pruning and placed in a more protected position when necessary.

Do you have a sad citrus tree?

Citrus trees have a reputation for being finicky. While they may require a lot of love and care, citrus are great at letting you know exactly what they need. Read our article on identifying what your citrus is trying to tell you.
