Your curious questions answered
What’s the difference between seaweed tonic and seaweed fertiliser?
We love adding seaweed products to the garden for good reason: they add nutrients to the garden, improve soil structure, feed beneficial microbes and micro-organisms, and encourage overall plant vigour. However, with so many seaweed-based products on the market, it’s easy to get confused. But seaweed tonic and fertiliser are not the same, and using the right one at the right time makes all the difference.
Seaweed tonic
Think of tonics as a garden pick-me-up, a shot of espresso for the garden, if you will.
Seaweed tonics:
- Promote root development
- Thicken plant cell walls to improve resistance to frost, heat, and stress
- Reduces transplant shock.
Importantly, seaweed tonics contain low amounts of fertiliser. They support plant health and stress resilience, but won’t feed your plants in the long run.
Seaweed fertiliser
Seaweed fertilisers combine seaweed extracts with organic matter, such as fish emulsion, humic acid, or composted manures.
Seaweed fertiliser:
- Provide nutrients to plants
- Improve soil fertility and microbial activity
- Offer both short- and long-term feeding benefits.
If you’re looking to enrich the soil and support plant health, seaweed fertilisers offer a two-in-one solution that feeds both your garden and the life within it.
